Would You Vibe With Me? @ Songbyrd

If you missed WYVWM last month, let Mosaic Souls be the ones to tell you that you missed out! A shared energy was relinquished on that dance floor every time one of the 5 artists took the stage. Neptune, Cloud Atrium, BSTN, Markus Gold, and WYVWM curator Koleco all transferred a felt sensation whether through mic or turntable to all of us listening, watching and experiencing the vibes promised.

We in attendance were blessed firstly by Neptune who spoke some real shit. More than bars she spit life lessons our way. Markus Gold not only transported us to the early 2000’s with “Shutter-Shades” Kanye and “American-Flag” Cam’ron (yea y’all are hip), but he also took us to church! Like a church choir we sang alongside Kirk Franklin + God’s Property starting our own revolutions. Cloud Atrium put on a show with a performance as energetic and vibrant as his lyrics. BSTN gave us some Island flavor when he played his hot mixes of some Caribbean favorites such as Sean Paul and Dawn Penn. Koleco ended the night right by concluding with a flow of mixed instrumentals incorporating heavy and rhythmic beats.

In the midst of all the festivities Mosaic Souls was able to have conversations with some cool individuals. Here’s what a few had to say...

Marianna: An avid listener of Koleco, told us that she first followed him originally as KNOIMNOT on Soundcloud and fell in love with his music.

Marianna:

I moved here from Arizona in September. I knew Koleco aka KNOIMNOT from Soundcloud. I loved the music, just fell in love. I was trying to go to the Thanksgiving/ Black Friday giving back- charity show, that was the first show.

MS:

Me 2 U?

Marianna:

Yes “Me 2 U”, and he was playing a lot of music that’s big. So I went up to him and asked what’s your name, do you have a Soundcloud I want to follow you? And he was like I’m KNOIMNOT, and I was like wait ,you’re KNOIMNOT -- you’re literally the person who I came to see! He took a photo with me, he was super cool and down to earth and then I followed him on instagram. I went to the first WYVWM tour and that was awesome. Then my friend from out of state came and I was like dude let’s just go here, it’s better than anything else, really good music.

MS:

And now you’re here!

Marianna:

Now I’m here!

Amanda, an excited partygoer who happens to be new to DC expressed to us her love of the city’s culture.

MS:

How did you end up here tonight?

Amanda:

I ended up here through a population connection action fund. I’m here for a conference to fight the global gap role with international women planning.

MS:

How did you hear about the event and where are you from?

Amanda:

I’m from Arizona, and through my friend who lives here and we saw it on social media this is my first time in DC and I love the open culture. It's a lot more open than the west coast, there's a lot more diversity here.

MS:

How did you like the music tonight?

Amanda:

I enjoyed it very much DC has more of a music scene & there’s a lot more culture in the music which inspires me, whereas where I’m from its very one dimensional in the west coast.

Diversity was definitely a theme of the night. Different genders and ethnicities, were represented in that basement of Songbyrd. People were conversing with another, swing-dancing, and belting out lyrics to rap, pop, and reggae songs in unison. It was like love, a dance-y, vibed out, pure sense of love.

Have you ever just wanted a place to dance with no regrets, lose your body to any song and live in the moment with people who match your vibe? Well that was the energy from the moment we stepped in until the minute danced out.

So the question remains, was it poppin?

Let’s just say Amanda put it best when asked the question and replied,

“It’s very fucking poppin!”
